High Museum

High Museum of Art, Woodruff Art Center – Atlanta, Georgia

Challenge
Waterproof a 20,000-square-foot concrete roof deck which serves as
the wing of the museum and was designed with 1,250 metal-based
circular skylights spaced 18 inches apart to protect priceless art treasures
directly below. The museum design was a collaboration between the Renzo Piano Building Workshop and Lord, Aeck & Sargent Architecture.

Solution
Installed Kemperol® V210 membrane with Kemperol® EP Primer and Kemperol® Kemcoat granular top coat, totally encapsulating the concrete deck substrate and flashing of the numerous skylights.

When completed, the museum launched Louvre Atlanta, an unprecedented three-year partnership with the Louvre Museum in Paris to bring hundreds of masterpieces to Atlanta.

“The works in the High Museum of Art's permanent collection and the traveling exhibitions hosted by the High Museum from other world-renowned museums range from old masters known to every school child to today's most sought-after pieces. To separate the art from the skies above we wanted a system that first and last was reliable and durable – period. We wanted a system that could accommodate as seamlessly as possible the 1,000-plus circular skylights penetrating the membrane, a roof that many decades out could be easily renewed without pain and suffering, a system that in the interim was easily accessible for inspection, and of course, a system that looks great and complements the vision of the whole building. We considered many, many alternative concepts, configurations and products. We chose Kemper. I am confident we chose well.”
