It’s not unusual when developing new products to test numerous prototypes before coming up with a final formulation. But when German industrialist Dr. Kemper developed the world’s first elastomeric cold liquid waterproofing in the late 1960’s it can be fairly said that he took this to the extreme!
At the time, glass-fibre was the membrane typically used for liquid waterproofing, yet whilst this was flexible in one direction, it had no lateral elasticity which meant resistance to movement and thermal expansion was poor, and failure through tearing or cracking not uncommon. This largely resulted from the individual components – resins, primers and membranes – coming together accidentally rather than as an integrated system.
In his search for a product that combined tensile strength, elasticity and permeability Dr. Kemper developed a unique system comprising polyester fleece and resins which together formed an exceptionally durable waterproofing membrane that was seamless, would bond to almost any substrate and offered permanent elasticity.
Ever the perfectionist, he trialled no less than 210 formulations in developing this final product, which was then brand-named – as perhaps only a German engineer could – “Version 210”. Kemperol V210 remains to this day the world’s leading professional waterproofing system, with the earliest installations now approaching their 40th year of continuous protection.
