The Europahaus, built in 1999, is situated right in the centre of Berlin in the immediate vicinity of the Brandenburg Gate, the Hotel Adlon and the Pariser Platz. It is home to, among other things, the offices of the EEC representatives as well as – on the ground floor – a restaurant with a small bar and an adjacent catering kitchen.
In kitchens in general and in catering kitchens in particular, fatty acids are released, initially in vapour form and then settling as solids on the building structures. These fatty acids attack cement–based materials like concrete and also steel reinforcements, causing expensive damage to the building over a period of time.
To prevent damage from fatty acids, the floors of the Berlin catering kitchen – together with the adjacent walls - were first treated with KEMPERTEC D-Primer in order to guarantee optimum bonding. This was followed by KEMPEROL® 2K-PUR which itself was then protected against increased alkalinity by a double application of KEMPERTEC EP-Primer with quartz sand particles. This was necessary so that the mineral adhesive used for laying the tiles does not attack the KEMPEROL in its liquid phase (pH 9 – 14). KEMPEROL 2K-PUR was selected principally for the following reasons:
• Since there is a large number of penetrations concentrated within a very confined area in the catering kitchen for water, waste water, electricity and floor drainage pipes, the system's performance in a wet environment and also its permanent elasticity play a crucial role.
• KEMPEROL 2K-PUR has excellent adhesion properties, allowing it to bond firmly to substrates as diverse as mineral screed, zinc plate and stainless steel.
• Since KEMPEROL 2K-PUR is solvent-free and odourless, it can be used indoors without the need for ventilation.
